On June 20th, The Health Initiatives committee headed up by Brother Ron Williams along with 23 other Brothers participated in the 8th annual Father's Day Run /Walk for Prostate Cancer event at Mercer County Park. Through participant donations, the Chapter was able to donate $500 to the American Cancer Society to assist in its efforts to eradicate prostate cancer; a cancer that is twice as likely to affect Black men as any other race or ethnicity.

Omega Psi Phi

At

Run For Dad

This year’s Run for Dad Father’s Day charity event was the perfect opportunity for the brothers of the Delta Upsilon graduate chapter of Omega Psi Phi fraternity to fulfill their internationally mandated Health Initiatives Program.

Omega Psi Phi was founded almost a century ago at Howard University as the first African American fraternal organization with a mission to build a strong and effective force of men dedicated to community service. The new Health Initiatives Program focuses on the special needs of the African American community and requires local graduate chapters to coordinate activities that will encourage good health practices, including annual screenings for prostate cancer, a disease that is diagnosed in one out of four African American men, almost twice the national rate for white and Asian men.

Pictured in the photo from the front left are Gary Keel, Chapter President and Ronald Williams, Chair of the Health Initiatives Committee, who is presenting a check for $500 to Run for Dad Co-Chairs, Frank Haggerty and Glenn Parker for support of the American Cancer Society’s programs for prostate cancer awareness and research. Mr. Williams, who led a team of 24 brothers participating in Sunday’s 2 mile walk, said, “We have been holding sessions every Tuesday evening to discuss health issues that confront us all, like nutrition and weight control, as well as special challenges for our brothers like prostate cancer. In the past, several individuals from our chapter have participated in Run for Dad, but I am especially delighted that 24 of our 100 chapter members decided to register so we could walk as a team this year.”

Run for Dad is the annual Father’s Day’s race, walk and fun-filled event for the whole family, held in Mercer County Park, to increase awareness about prostate cancer and raise money to support the American Cancer Society’s research, education and screening projects.
