Dr. Eugene J. Gadson was born in Tampa Florida and reared and educated in New York City Public schools. Dr. Gadson is a graduate of Long Island University, and New York University, respectively receiving his B.S., and his M. A. in Clinical Psychology after he was Honorably Discharged from the Armed Services. He pursued advance graduate work at Yeshiva University’s Ferkoff Graduate School for his Doctor of Philosophy degree, and Rutger’s University, Graduate School of Applied and Professional psychology. Upon graduation, he was honored with the Winifred Starbuck Scott award of New Jersey Psychological Trust for an outstanding Doctoral dissertation. He was deeply concerned with the tendency of school systems to over-identify Black children as handicapped and developed a testing procedure that would be proactive and address potentially handicapping problems on the kindergarten level. Dr. Gadson became an Omega Man in the New York City chapter after he graduated from Long Island University and is the current Vice Basileus of Delta Upsilon Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Dr. Gadson was the first Black Psychologist employed by the State of New Jersey at Bordentown Reformatory. He was a pioneer in establishing a group Psychotherapy program for inmates in a correctional setting because he believed that incarceration alone was not enough to help inmates to turn their lives around as productive citizens of society. He presented a film of his techniques to the American Academy of Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama at their convention in New York City. He was the only black presenter at the conference. Segments of the film made by CBS were extracted for the documentary “The Face of Crime” that was aired on national TV. When Dr. Gadson left Bordentown reformatory, he moved on to Greystone State Hospital as the acting chief psychologist and then to the Trenton Public Schools where he became the first Black Director of Special Services in Mercer County. He achieved another first when the School District gave him a leave to become the first Director of the Urban League of Metropolitan Trenton. an affiliate established by the late Catherine Graham. He was the president of Carver YMCA for several years and was a consulting psychologist for the Princeton Cooperative School program that increased the pool of Black students going to College from Urban settings during the period of the Black push for civil rights after the great riots in American cities. He was president of the Black Cultural Center of Trenton that was designed to enhance the self- image of Black youths. He felt that the most important factor in Black achievement was self- pride. He felt that years of oppression in our society eroded black dignity and killed dreams that they could become somebody. Dr. Gadson retired from the Trenton Board of Education after 26 years of service and established Trenton Psychological Services Inc., a multi-ethnic organization devoted to providing Psychological services to inner city populations. This organization operated for 13 years before its termination. Dr. Gadson currently works part time with teen-agers in special programs under the aegis of the Juvenile Justice Commission since his retirement and continues to adhere to the cardinal principals of Omega: Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, & Uplift. He is the father of 2 daughters and one son and is currently a great grandfather.
